Walking pad workouts while working

A walking pad works best as a change of activity for suitable tasks, not as a test of how much work and exercise you can force into the same minute.

Set up before the belt moves

Clear the area, place the controls within reach, secure loose cables and check the manufacturer's instructions. Start at an easy pace while looking ahead. Slow the belt before stepping off.

Match it to the right kind of work

Listening to a presentation, taking a familiar call, or reviewing simple notes may pair well with easy walking. Detailed writing, design work, sensitive conversations and anything that takes your eyes away from the belt are better done still.

Begin with a short block

Try five easy minutes, then step off and notice whether your posture, concentration and footing remained comfortable. Extend later in small steps. There is no prize for turning the first attempt into an hour.

Use intervals when one pace becomes stale

Alternate a brisk but controlled period with an easier recovery. Change speed gradually and keep the controls accessible. If the work becomes demanding, return to the easy pace or stop the belt.
